What Does Arthritis in the Shoulder Feel Like?
Over time, many people can develop shoulder pain and immobility due to factors like the natural aging process, chronic conditions, or injury. Those feelings are often caused by loss of cartilage and deterioration of joint structures, and can lead to a form of shoulder arthritis. Common symptoms of shoulder arthritis include:
- Pain and discomfort in the shoulder joint
- Feelings of shoulder tenderness and sensitivity
- Stiffness and reduced range of motion
- Grinding, clicking, or popping sounds
- Swelling in the joint
- Inability to sleep comfortably
Many patients experiencing these feelings likely have a type of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, arthritis after injury, or rheumatoid arthritis. To help restore function and relieve pain, shoulder joint replacement may eventually be necessary.
Two of the most common types of shoulder joint replacement our orthopaedic surgeons perform include total shoulder joint replacement and reverse total shoulder joint replacement. Determining which surgical procedure to pursue will depend on the severity of the condition and a patient’s individual needs. The total replacement process involves an artificial ball-and-socket mechanism inserted to replace the damaged and arthritic joint. The other option, reverse total shoulder replacement, entails the ball mechanism placed in the shoulder capsule and the socket attached to the upper arm bone. This approach may work best if a patient’s rotator cuff is severely damaged.
